If this truck doesn't have factory A/C, it's not too bad to remove the heater core. It sounds like the core is stopped up. Unless they changed it for '85, the heater core doesn't have a water valve. There is a blend door that is operated by the cable. I just put one in my '84 a few weeks ago.
Take the glove box out and you can access most of the innards right there. Before you try to take it out though, remove the blower fan from the heater assembly under the hood. Then, it'll just drop right down and out when you get all the little bitty finger sticking screws. The top has to come off the assembly and the core pops right out. The only problem I had was the #$^&%##%^ clips holding the cables in place. There is a tab that you push in from the front of the bracket. The cable approaches from the back.
