Leak from axle???

I have a big leak coming out of a rear wheel, like a leaky wheel cylinder, only more. Could this be a leaky axle seal? Is there more than one seal that could cause this problem?

Is is common for this to happen spontaneously? The truck had not been moved for weeks, all of sudden there was quite a big leak.
