Jack up one front wheel, and look for looseness by moving the wheel in all planes...up/down, in /out, left/right. Inspect the seals at the base of the joints for tears/wear/grease leaking out. Repeat the same on the opposite side.
Mine were OK, somewhat loose but not yet ready for replacement due to damage when I replaced the unit bearings; I chose to replace them rather than go back a year later. The new ball joints were better made and allowed me to grease them rather than replace...
