When I got my '47 home in 1980, it looked kind of like Dana's truck. Here is an image of it now. You can see the rust around the edges.

The paint was very chalky and dull. I wanted to bring out the color and protect it so I coated it with WD40 about every year for 8 years or so. I thought about clear coating the truck, but did not want a real glassy look all over everything. I thought satin or flat clear would look even worse, especially if it started to flake off.

By about the time of the first VPW Rally, I started just waxing the truck (after first bringing out the color with rubbing compound). I wax it once a year whether it needs it or not. I wax over the rust and all. It helps maintain the color and the waxing process bleeds a little of the green into the rusty areas. You can see some of the rust as light colored areas in the photo.

I started using Meguires wax and then I use their quick detailer a few times a year. The quick detailer removes most of the whiteness from the wax that sticks to the rust.

I do not know if this is what you would call original patina or not. I finally had to paint the fenders, running boards, and wheels as there was not much paint left. But, I feel I am bringing out the best in the truck without altering any more than I have to at the moment.
