I typed too fast. The nominal voltage for our vehicles would be either 6 or 12 volts.
The "real" or "actual" voltage would be the at-rest voltage you get on the multi-meter, which varies considerably depending on battery condition.
It's possible to estimate the charge of a battery by measuring the at-rest voltage of the battery.
At rest,a fully-charged lead acid battery will deliver about 2.1 to 2.2 volts per cell.
