I made a socket like tool from heavy wall pipe. I cut one end so it had "teeth" that went down into the top of the cap. They were cut at a slight angle to get a positive lock on the cap. I drilled a trough hole at the other end of the pipe for a cheater bar to go through.
To remove the cap I punched the pins inward and cut them with a chisel until they were out. We attached the carrier to a diff holding plate that went into a large vice. We heated the case with a torch then used a 5 ft cheater bar. It took two of us to break it loose and our work bench was tilting when we pulled on it. Putting it together was easier. We put the cover in the freezer and heated the case. We still did not get pin holes perfectly aligned before we could not move it any more.
