1) Remove the spark plug closest to the radiator (#1)
2) Remove the distributor cap, but you can leave the wires connected. Your goal is to see the rotor during this test.
3) Put your thumb over the open spark plug hole on #1 cyllinder.
4)Have a friend crank the starter, but with the key OFF, we don't need or want the engine to start.
5) Watch the rotor turn while the engine turns over. Remember the direction it turns in, clockwise or counterclockwise. Also note where the rotor is pointing when the compression on #1 cyllinder hisses from under your thumb (top dead center) Remember the position as 2 o'clock, 4 o'clock or something like that. Have your friend crank it continuosly for 20-30 seconds while you observe and memorize.
6) Put the distributor cap back on, and the sparkplug back in. Make sure that the plug wire for # 1 cyllinder is placed in the cap where you saw the rotor pointing when #1 was top dead center.
7)Let's say the rotor was turning counter-clockwise is step 5 above, and the rotor was pointing at 2 o'clock when #1 cyllinder was top of it's stroke. Simply make sure the #1 sparkplug wire is plugged into the tower on top of the distributor cap at 2 o'clock, and the one to the left of it (remember counter clockwise)is # 5, and keep doing that check until you have done all 6 plug wires.
8) The cyllinders are numbered 1 thru 6 in order on the engine. #1 is closest to the radiator, and #6 is in the back closest to the firewall of the cab.
It's that easy.
