I built a holding jig out of trashed ring gear. Removed dowel pins. Built a tool to engage the cap (using one of the largest and longest pipe I had). My shop has pipe sleeves poured into the floor for inserting mounting jigs into. You need a real solid way to hold yours. I have heard of a steel bench being cut and modified to hold the unit. The benchwould need real firm mounting! My jig was such that when the unit was mounted and heated I could sit on the pipe and add strong blows with a large rubber hammer for shock value. Several cycles and it comes loose. I don't know if it is true but I have been told that the cap is on (interference fit) with someting around 1000+ pound feet of torque. I am 250 pounds and my pipe was about 6-7 feet long and it still fought me the entire way. I have been told (don't know if true) that if the cap comes off easy there may be a problem with the unit.
Could not have done it with out the large rubber hammer blows. I had to hit the pipe lever as hard as I could stand while sitting on the lever to supply torque. The trick is in the holding jig and the cap tool.
I cheated and baked the entire unit and jig in an old oven I keep in the shop. Then with carefull use of welding gloves I slip the jig and diff into the sleeved hole in my shop floor. Then the fun starts.
Like noted earlier, stamp the starting point so you make sure to have a refernce when it is time to reassemble.
If you have time and a little money, throw the thing into a 5 gallon bucket, screw the lid on and ship it to Bob Stahl. He works wonders with these!! Great guy to work with. A wealth of experience and knowledge. He used to be a great source for new gear sets.
Good luck and Happy New Year!
