An interesting discovery while reinstalling the oil filter on the W500's 361 BB. I have the oil pan off to replace the gasket and take out the dent from a previous owners clutch/tranny replacement (clutch blew apart and took out the tranny).
I noticed where I expected so see a timing chain (was going to see how much play), there was a gear! Looked up further and there was the cam shaft gear, with no idler gears between them. Thus the camshaft rotates in the reverse direction of a standard engine!
Apparently as best as I can tell this was unique to industrial and heavy truck engines (and the earliest hemi's built for NASCAR testing).
In order for the oil pump and cam to rotate the standard direction, there is a special reverse rotation intermediate shaft.
What you will discover and then lear the more you did into things.
