well king pin/trunion designs are all you need. a ball joint allows movement in directions that are not needed and cause wandering in a driven axle situation. before ball joints they used to have a king pin and 2 horizontal pins on cars with independent wishbone susp. that stuff never wore out either if you greased it. No money to be made at the dealer with designs like that!
