My 1983 GMC 6.2 glow plug controller was drivers rear of engine on top of the manifold edge there. Seems like mine was like the size of 2 C or D batterys. Unplug it and unscrew it and replace. Its screwed into the waterjacket if I remember correctly. They were expensive 20 years ago. Like 100$ then.
As far as CC's idea of bypassing it or go manual you better have some heavy wire when you do it. Lots of current goes thru it. I bypassed it to get me started and burned a jumper wire up the first time. This was a GMC van so it was easy to jump the glow plugs and start. ALl right from the drivers seat.
