The card can go bad, either not heating the glow plugs, or heating too long and burning them out. If they burn out, some times they swell, and break off when unscrewed. Not too hard to remove the broken end, just remove the injector, move piston to top, knock the broken piece into the cylinder, and fish it out with a magnet through the injector hole.
The most common fault on the card is repairable too, IIRC.
Mine had a bad senser, left rear corner of the intake? $10 at the corner part store.
Bypassing the card is not too hard, some wire and a momentary switch. Then you hold the button for a count, and hit the starter.
