Have you;
Pulled the battery terminals and cleaned them
Pulled the battery wire off the starter and cleaned its connection
Used a volt meter to measure the voltage at the battery terminal
Beating on the starter with a hammer is a waste of time and energy. Even if it did free s stuck brush, its only a band aid. You will have more problems in the future. If the above tests prove good, pull the starter.
If you feel competent, open the starter and see if its full of rust or corrosion. You may be able to clean and rebuild, or you may have to have a starter shop rebuild it. If you still choose to use a hammer.....use a real big one and wail on it LOL.
