The newer battery will have a higher resting voltage. So, until they equalize, the newer battery will try to charge the weaker battery.
At a lower voltage, a battery will experience more hardening of sulfur on the plates since there is less sulfur in the electrolyte and more on the plates.
New, matched batteries are more likely to have the same resting voltage and thus less likely to cause each other a problem.
