If you were filling it with gear lube, sure, it would be just like a transmission, or a differential. Adding grease from the top, it is still going to fill the cavity before the grease is forced out the hole in the bottom.
You want to fill yours with grease at the bottom, up to that level, fine. I have lots of spare axles to sell when yours wear out after about a mile of meshing together dry.
