These old trucks really weren't made to go fast. In addition to gearing one of the problems I have noticed with higher speeds is that the old brake systems weren't designed to handle braking from higher speeds. Mine has some pretty small brake shoes for such a heavy truck. Trying to brake for a traffic light when going 55mph took a lot more distance than I thought, especially with a load. I guess some people upgrade the brake system but I'm kind of an originalist. Still I do get flipped off alot.
