According to this fellow one is installed on the exhaust system and the other is a vacum operated unit under the hood and is involved in the air intake. How this works I don´t know. Was kind of hoping somebody here would know more about it.

Or is there a reason that you can´t do it on a gas engine. He says it also serves as an emergency shut off for the engine.
