The original Thanksgiving was to remember and thank the Almighty God for all His blessings. Governor William Bradford and his Pilgrim Colony celebrated that first Thanksgiving for those who survived the winter, and then having been blessed with a bountiful harvest and new friends in the new country. They had fled the volatile political environment in the East Midlands of England as they were escaping the Monarchical rule and the will of the English Church. The Pilgrims had arranged with English investors to establish a new colony in North America and set sail in 1620 on their new life. They learned the first had cultural decline of a social society through the brief Mayflower Compact, that was drafted promising cooperation among the settlers "for the general good of the Colony unto which we promise all due submission and obedience.
