Following what Paul said; I keep a putty knife close buy when I sand blast to scrape off any old crud, because media (in my case sand or black beauty) barely phases the stuff.
Also, I recommend ear plugs when using a larger sand blaster and doing it for long periods. Although it might not seem very loud, the "pinging" on the metal for long periods can leave you feeling like you're in a box for a while after blasting without ear plugs.
