I think the argument for non detergent oil in a engine with no full flow oil filter and a floating pickup is that particles are suppossed to settle to the pan. with detergent oil the particles stay in suspension and will circulate through the engine over and over. Also with an old engine if it has not had detergent oil there will be significant buildup that will not necessarily harm anything if left alone but if detergent is added may dirty the oil very quickly. That said all the non-detergent oils I have seen are labeled as light duty motor oil which just sounds wrong in a power wagon. I personally run diesel motor oil (Rotella is my favorite) in all my non emmision engines, mostly because I have heard that modern gas motor oils don't have enough zinc (i believe) to lubricate the cam properly. In fact comp cams won't warrenty a cam unless it is broken in with thier additive or diesel motor oil. I wish I could say that running Rotella has resulted in a long happy life for my flat head but unfortunatly the engine in my m37 didn't like inhaling muddy water all that much and now I have a 4bt.
