I have mentioned before a fellow that used to sell dodge trucks to the oil field folks in houston when I lived there in the 60's and 70's, he said they would retrofit and would do all kinds of stuff in the shop, said they even did 6x6s by flippng the rear axle over and running a drive line to it. He said that the v8's broke axles on a regular basis and that's when they came up with the idea to notch the short axle at the hub so if anything went it would be the first to go and an easy replace. They actually preferred the flatheads though for the real work and were jusp playing with the v8s, whether they ever got one straight from the factory is anybody's guess
