I have been hanging out with Harvey Bush a lot lately. He is the machinist in Greensburg, PA that's helping me rebuild the 251 for the 1967 WM300. Harvey does most of the work. I help out a little and ask a lot of questions.

We were looking at the ring gear the other day. It is only worn in one spot. Three or four teeth show wear on the front edge where the starter engages the gear. The rest of the teeth look brand new.

Harvey told me that an engine will consistently stop with the crank, flywheel and ring gear assembly in the same position. As he explained it, the cylinder with the most compression will cause the engine to come to rest in the same place time after time. I had never known this to be the case, or even thought about it before.

Harvey said the chances of the rebuilt engine coming to rest in the same spot as before is practically nil, so the ring gear is fine. I'm sure Nick, my "mathlete" son, could calculate the probability, but that's another story. I guess in theory that over time you might even be able to tell if an engine was previously rebuilt if there were multiple worn "spots" on the ring gear.

Can't wait to get the engine installed in the truck. May happen as early as this weekend if all goes well.
