You can get cut-outs cheaply or free in a lot of cases.
It turns very nicely on a standard wood lathe and some of the whites give a good approximation of ivory.
I saw a loving cup turned out of Corian on a Holtzapffel (ornamental) lathe. The result was execellent.
Glueing up alternating colors can gice you a very striking effect as well.
