Well it is time again for Junior to travel from Illinois to visit Spence in North Carolina and spend a few days snooping around Wilkes County. For those of you who don't know, Wilkes County is famous for three things: moonshine, stock car racing, and Power-Wagons - not necessarily in that order!
I am always looking for new and interesting routes to take to cover the 870 and some odd miles while still doing it all in one allotted day. I find that Mapquest shows if I cut off at Cincinnati across country, instead of heading south to Lexington, or first driving from Indy south to Louisville, I can shave around 40 miles off of the trip and maybe 15 minutes to a half hour to boot.
Is anyone here familiar with route #9 from Cincinnati to near South Point? Or maybe stay on the Ohio side of the river towards Portsmouth?
I do not mind traveling some two-lane roads to break up the monotony as long as they are not heavy traffic popular short cuts and/or speed traps for out-of-state midwesterners.
Any input appreciated.
Thanks,
Junior
