How were your driving habits in the Dakota? All short trips, or some long enough to get the thing good and warmed up? to melt the wax?
One shop used to sell folks on radiator flushes to de-grease the cooling system. Theory was that even a molecule thick layer of grease or oil on the inside of the passages would slow down heat transfer. But I don't remember the theory of where the gunk supposedly came from.
Once upon a time, after my command car had been parked for 2-3 years, I pulled the thermostat housing. Under the thermostat was a disc of glop, reminded me of mushroom. Coolant was still bright green with anti-freeze. I figured it for a fungus, like the fungus that lives in diesel fuel.
So, I guess routine/preventative flushes are a good idea.
