Remember the aluminum wire? The last time the price of copper went through the roof, back in the 1970s, they started wiring houses with aluminum wire. I still have a piece around somewhere. Then after they'd been using it for a few years, they discovered that the connections work themselves loose, overheat, and start fires inside the walls. Oops. Time to re-wire the whole house.
Sort of like LP siding -- great stuff if you can keep it from getting wet. The building trade is full of cr*p products that are approved by the building codes because they're made by big companies that have lots of pull. But try getting a building inspector to let you use your own home-milled lumber made out of real trees. No matter how beautiful it is and how obviously superior it is to the plantation-grown "hem-fir", if it doesn't have that grading stamp on it, you can't use it.
