I go through Helmer pretty often and it never looked to me like the kind of place where a cafe could survive on the business of the latte and sprouts set. If she wants to survive the winter, she needs the locals' business a lot more than the locals need her coffee. Soon as that word gets around, I expect she'll lose most of the regulars.
Of course it was probably just a hobby business for her, something to do with part of the $200K they had left over after they sold their L.A. shack for $700K and bought a log McMansion in Helmer for $500K. Bet they have a fancy motorized gate at the end of their driveway and "No Hunting" signs nailed all around their property. Around here, I'm starting to see some of those Californians trying to leave, with their tails between their legs, after finding out that we really aren't interested in their great ideas for how we ought to do things and they really did pay way too much for their houses. Once in a while there's one who "gets it" and settles in, but most of them have been severely humbled by the recession.
