After studying my photos prior to disassembly 8 years ago, and a buch of other photos, it turn out the support does go in with the notches towards the frame. The radiator mounts in front of the support at a crazy angle with the bottom sticking out more than the front. The 1967 parts catalog is no help at all because it actually shows a WDX-style radiator with the offset inlet tube! The caption says "WM300" but it is the old style radiator that mounts on the inside of the vertical supports!
The factory still cut the frame crossmembers. As I understand it now, it is because even the notches in the support still did not allow enough vertical adjustment to elevate the radiator as needed with washers as spacers to align it with the hood and cab.
Well, so much for my cockamamie ideas. I'm gonna go comb my radiator now. Leave me alone!
