The ideal "weight" of leather is about 12 or 14 oz, about 3/16" thick.
Be sure to use neatsfoot oil every 6 months or so on it to keep it supple. The dying process dries the leather out, as does the heat from the drive train.
You can get neatsfoot oil from Tandy on line or in one of their stores.
