If you have looked at my homepage you have seen pictures of the 1956 Power Wagon I have. According to the guy I bought it from it was originally used for laying oil pipelines in western Pa. The 56 has a winch mounted behind the cab and an "A" frame mounted on the back of the bed. The winch cable runs to a sheave anchored on the back of the bed and then up to the "A" frame. There is a pipe mounted on bearings that works as a roller across the entire back of the bed.
This weekend we were traveling on I-80 in western pa and came across a Kenworth with a New Mexico license plate. It had the identical setup mounted on it. A large winch mounted behind the cab, an A frame, the same sheave on the back of the bed, and a large pipe roller mounted on bearings on the back of the bed.
There is a large amount of drilling and pipeline activity in Pa as a result of the Marcellus shale. Apparently they are still laying pipe the same way it was done years ago with the power wagon.
