My white dog used to do that all the time, trying to get the pack rats that live in the M35s, and run around on the frame rails teasing her. If you don't want to give your dog a hot bath with dish soap, and he or she isn't really soaked to the skin, just let it grow out. I'm always amazed at how fast a dog's hair grows out when they get a bald spot from a tick or mange or where I had to cut out some pitch or other goo. Oil on the skin is probably not very good, but oil on the hair is just looks, and dogs don't care what they look like.
