Could it be that when running it backwards, the angle of the gear teeth forces them sideways in the direction that the thrust bearings weren't designed for, thus causing them to either move partly out of engagement, rub on something, or impose thrust on a plain busing or washer rather than a real bearing? Any of those would cause noise and short life.
