Yesterday I spent 5 hours adjusting the valves on my truck which was the first time since aquiring the truck in 85. I pulled the I/E manifold off so I could get to the covers easy to do it since I don't like working around a hot exhaust or pulling the fender/splash shield. Some of the clearances were a little tight/loose on the cold engine. Instead of adjusting the usual .010I and .014E, I set the adjustment to .012I and .016E. When I first start the engine there is noticable tappet noise that quiets down once the engine is warmed to operating temp with still a little tappet noise. I think the settings are good for cold setting the tappet clearance, if you don't mind a little tappet noise. At least I know clearance is not too tight.
