There's another old-time option that's sort of a compromise between a hoist and a pit: a drive-up rack, like the wash racks they use in the army. It wouldn't be too hard to build out of stout timbers or cribbing full of dirt, and you could build it to carry any weight you might need to put on it. It'd probably be considered "blight" in a yuppity subdivision, but out in the country nobody would mind. It would be more expensive than building a pit as part of a garage project, but way more foolproof and cheaper than a hoist.
