Hi Tony,
I am also planning to convert to 12 volts, so that I can install more easily obtainable accessories and so that I can install electronic ignition. But, if you are installing it so that you can keep your battery charged, you might consider checking to make sure your voltage/current regulator is adjusted properly. A few years ago, I had my 6-volt generator rebuilt, I bought a new battery and 00-gauge cables and rewired the charging circuit. I had also bought a brand new Borg-Warner regulator. I was still having trouble keeping the battery fully charged, and it became noticeable in the hot summer weather after I had driven at highway speeds. The starter (which was also newly rebuilt) would not turn over the engine fast enough to start. Finally, I figured out that the battery was not being adequately charged. It turns out that the new regulator did not come adjusted from Borg-Warner. I ended up taking the truck to an auto electrical shop where they adjusted the regulator. After that, I had no problem.
Just one possiblity to check.
