Legal with no gauges???

Is it legal to drive with no gauges on your truck?? I am working on my dash and went out for a drive today with no dash in it. I have a tacometer on the outside of the dash. I went for a ride without passing the people that looked like they were going fast. I had no problems exept trying to down shit and not knowing how fast the truck was going.
