I have used 3/4" closed cell foam on my truck's roof. I buy the blue camping sleeping pads. It will form fit the curves without any problems. I used a high temp spray automotive upholstery glue to hold it in place. High temp is important so it will not let loose on a hot summer day. I has been up there since 2001 and has not come loose yet.
As Paul said you can glue what every you want on top of the foam for a finished surface.
