Someone else's advice was to break apart an old pallet, the cross pieces inside are pretty good oak, so that's exactly what a buddy and I did! We destroyed an old pallet, ripped the inside pieces on a table saw, cut 'em to length and made a make-shift jig to drill out the holes.
