There was an article in latest issue of Popular Mechanics about that very topic... seems there are several aftermarket additives specifically used in breaking in race motors.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this lack of zinc is what has caused the premature wear on the cam in my 327 in the '41 WC...got some flat spots, thinking about upgrading the cam this winter anyway.
