Waterpump leak

I just helped my nephew reinstall his new water pump on his 49 FFPW. He changed it out last week due to a leaky seal, but after he changed it there was a leak between the pump and the block. We cleaned both surfaces well, checked for flatness and high spots, and snugged it up real good - and it still leaks. I was bad and used the same gasket (did not have a spare or appropriate stock to make a new one) but the gasket sure looked good. My plan at this time is to get a proper gasket and either use thread seal on the bolts or soft copper washers, but I am thinking there might be something special I am missing. Any hints? I am going to confession about reusing a gasket.
