setting with the feeler gauge is merely a starting point. To check and see if they are set correctly a dwell meter is a must. it might seem to run fine when just gapped and run and not teseted with the meter but if they are running ouside of spec it will drastically shorten the life of the points. Also did you lube the distributor cam lobe when you installed the points.? if not the point block wears down and the points gradually get closer and closer till it starts running poorly or not at all. I think the dweel spec is 40 to 45 degrees but I would check a manual. dwell is also known as "cam angle" in books. POints are a more trail friendly design. if petronix fails you are dead in the water. if points get contaminated or wet and can be cleaned and dried.
