are you running a chevy motor? they break flex plates quite a bit. gotta unbolt the tranny and slide it back enough to get tto the crank bolts. you can buy heavy duty flex plates for racing applications. it is worth the extra money especially if your engine is built. I have broken the heavy duty ones too but that was from drag racing. :/)
