USDA and Argonne National Laboratory concluded (link below) that there is a 34% energy gain in producing ethanol. That is not nearly as good as biodiesel, which delivers 450% of the energy required to produce it, but it's way better than petroleum. Petroleum only delivers about 80% of the energy invested by the time you get it to your automobile.
And whose government do you think you are subsidizing when we import petroleum? Think about it. Would you rather pay taxes to your government that come back to farmers and businessmen in your community-money they can spend in your business? Or would you rather keep exporting dollars to Suadi Arabia? Apartments shaped like Power Wagons aside, I don't trust they will spend that money in a way that benefits America-quite the contrary. We can spend our money here to make a stronger America or we can hand our money over to let other countries take our place as a world leader. Money is power. The more money we give to other countries the more powerful they become and the weaker be become.
We may need more domestic natural gas, but what are we going to do when that runs out? We need to diversity our energy sources. We need domestic fossil fuels, we need renewable replacements for gasoline and diesel. We need solar, wind, and geothermal, too. The technology has to get better, but it won't unless we start working on it seriously.
I totally agree with you about putting Americans to work. That needs to be a top priority
