Bead apperance is a good starting point, but to test a weld properly takes destructive means. To check penitration weld two test coupons in a fillit ouench it while red hot and bend or hammer it closed untill it breaks and look it over. Quenching will help it break easyer.
There is all kinds of tests, tension , acid etch and so on but you can try several of you beads in your shop this way.
