You will find a Data Plate on the front left side of the engine, riveted to the timing case cover. This data plate gives all engine info, serial number, injection pump info, CPL (control parts list) and if its a Cummins Recon, the recon number will be there and date of recon.
Sometimes the serial number was stamped on the rear of the block, right up at the block/head joint. But its not done all the time, dont know why. None of my engines have the rear serial number.
Trying to buy any, any parts with out the data plate serial number and cpl will get real strange looks from the Cummins Parts guy.
