water distribution tube and speedometer glass

ok i'm sure this has been asked before but i haven't seen where, just what does the water distribution tube do in the 230 motor?, what would happen if you don't replace itif its bad ? motor run hot, oil in the water, vapor lock, etc , also anyone make the glass only for the speedometers thanks in advance for any help
