David, Kinda sounds like a timing chain to me. Haven't replaced one on a slanty motor in at least 16 years, but if I remember right, you don't have to drop the pan, you can just loosen it in order to get the timing chain cover off. For the dampener you will need a puller with two slots and bolts to fit in the threaded holes to remove it, and a large fine thread bolt (don't remember the size)and some spacers to pull it back on the end of the crank. After that, replacing the timing chain is a snap. Hope this helps. johnbird
