Transfer case oil seal

The transfer case on our '49 FFPW has been leaking from the rear oil seal. I picked up PN 21203 from NAPA which is slightly less than half an inch thick. Upon tearing out the old seal today, I noticed it was one inch thick and composed of a ring of leather, then rubber, then thick black plastic - all in a metal casing. Am I missing something? For those using 21203, do you double them up? There is about 1 inch of room in front of the bearing.
