I hit this way too often. In my case, the engine would not turn over when the bearing caps were torqued to specs. Clearance was a half thousandth vs 1.5 thousandth on the plastigage. Drove me nuts.
As noted previously, not even 'spec' parts fill the bill. A machinist friend admitted that he sometimes went mix-and-match through several sets of bearings to find the right parts.
A learning experience, to be sure.
