Earlier this morning I tried the "freeze trick" with the upside down can of air (for cleaning dust in computers) and it worked; the tiny amount of shrinkage allowed me to get a little movement in the key when I used a drift against the end.
I cleaned up the marks on it with the grinder and I believe it will be o.k. to reuse. If not I will have to get another.
